Funeral Leave Privileges for FT and PT Workers

Full-Time and Part-Time employees are eligible for funeral leave (bereavement).

Yeah, that's what I wrote. Part-Timers too.

Article 3.6 covers all PT workers. But it looks tricky when you reach sub-article I, Part U. The Article lists every classification, except "provided herein." So it is possible that the only PT workers who will get it are "Operators." That is, PTBO (Part Time Bus Operator) and FTTF (Full-Time Temporary Flagmen) with RTO qualification. It also includes "Servicers." So why not "Customer Assistants?"

More ambiguity is thrown at us in that sub-article II is titled "Local 241 Part-Time Operators." Still, we have the term "bus" in sub-article I to cover us. This "Contract" is so poorly written and needs revision. Thankfully, the Chicago Transit Justice Coalition is working on it with the unofficial Worker's Contract: https://bit.ly/3l1S3cd

Regardless, I recommend that ALL PT workers invoke this on a report to manager when you need to use it. Bus and rail. If you no longer pay dues, you still have a right to use this benefit or grieve it if you were ripped off. So don't let that get in the way of trying.

Moreover, I suggest that ALL PT workers submit a grievance if you were written up or not paid for the allowed time for the funeral leave (not to exceed 12 hours). That includes Second Chancers. Unfortunately, if 30 days have passed, you may not get it.

Make sure you have proof of the funeral, such as a program or other record.

Regardless, I suggest you grieve it so that the CTA gets the message: Don't steal from your employees!

Below is the FT funeral leave in Article 4.9. Although there is some ambiguity here, you should be getting 24 hours total (3 days at 8 hours pay for each day). Make sure you have proof of the funeral, such as a program or other record.
