Motor Blower: A Little Bit of History

There are many different jobs that our union bargains for at the Chicago Transit Authority. One of them is a small group of workers called Motor Blowers (also known as Motor Cleaners). These coworkers don extensive PPE to literally clean the large rail car traction motors—and related parts—so they can run efficiently.

Their pay rate is not listed in the salary charts because many decades ago their jobs was part of the Rail Car Servicer (Cleaner) craft. That officially changed in an 1999 agreement signed by then-president Jerry Williams (who infamously agreed with the CTA to destroy the Conductor craft and was rewarded with a management job after members voted him out of office).

So if you want to know the hourly rate rate for Motor Blower, just refer to Rail Car Servicer.

Special thanks to Local 308 Vice President, Brother Mark Weems for the confirmation.
