CTA Official Holidays (2025)
All CTA workers should know about the Holidays that are recognized in the Collective Bargaining Agreement—especially the "Sunday Schedule" days that almost always confuse us for many years.
That is, if you do not have Sunday as an off-day in your picked schedule, you will need to show up at work according to your assignment on Sundays:
- New Year’s Day
- Memorial Day
- Fourth of July
- Labor Day
- Thanksgiving
- Christmas
When I was a Customer Service Assistant on July 4, 2018, I went to work late, thinking I was doing my "comfort relief trick" when I was supposed to be at O'Hare station instead. Fortunately, one of the Clerks called my cellphone and straightened me out (and also protected me from getting written up). I also immediately called O'Hare station kiosk to apologize to my coworkers and tell them I was on my way.
If your picked schedule has Sundays as an off-day, you will not be on the schedule for work. There are some schedules that may indicate "Works All Holidays." In that case, you must show up.
Learn about the details on the Holidays from the CTA memorandum and what is in our Collective Bargaining Agreement ("Contract"). I have included Article 9 and 10 so bus and rail workers can have access. The differences are minuscule, but you should know that there is a difference in the Contract.
