Jury Duty: Know Your Rights!

Prove you are going to you get the day off
We will all get the call to serve the public in a jury trial. Article 4.2 of the Contract has everything you need to know. The CTA must pay you for 8 hours minimum and they cannot make you work on the same day of jury. This is for everyone (FTP, FTT, Second Chance and PTT).

Some tips you should know:

If your summons has you reporting at 9 am—but you work midnights—they cannot make you work!

Bring a copy of your summons and attach it to a Report to Manager (make copies of everything and send a copy to a trusted union representative)

Write something like this:

On DATE, I am required to be at court for jury service. As per Article 4.2 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement "No employee will perform work on a day when the employee has reported for jury duty…" Please excuse me from work with wages equal to what I have earned with a minimum of 8 hours of pay.

If you are out more than the one day, call in and inform the manager or Clerk that you will be out more days. When you are all done, make sure you bring documentation from the court to prove your absence. I have included the entire article from the Contract below:

Know your rights so you will be less stressed out
