The M-1000: A Powerful Weapon For the Union Members
The M-1000 project records all complaints against and contract violations of CTA managers by union members (I named it after the CTA's own "m-100" work record they keep on us workers; it's ten times better).
I believe the M-1000 is a "weapon" because it will help members organize action like a real union does—a Revolutionary Union (an organization controlled by the members and not the elected people).
It will also contain commendations about the minority of decent people who are managers (I tell members if they are happy with a manager, then I am happy with him/her too).
The M-1000 started out as a simple spreadsheet (which can naturally grow unwieldy due to an increasing amount of entries). Migrating it to a genuine database will take us to a much higher level of sophistication—one that I intend on surpassing.
Every time they harass us, write us up, and punish us, they will receive entries on their record. These entries will incur demerits (even when they are reported to have violated CTA rules).
It will be a major part of the new ATU Local 308 Mismanagement Accountability Department (MAD). With the help of fellow stewards and brave coworkers, I have already submitted substantial complaints about two particularly bad managers. The MAD also has a code of punishment I call Corrective Action Guidelines (like they have for us).
Details about this will be available in a forthcoming book about my agenda as prospective union president. I intend on publishing it soon.
If I win president, MAD will be an important tool for correcting the misbehavior of mismanagers and building the membership up for collective action. How we—as a union—punish our tormentors, will be up to the members' democratic will. I am just their willing servant and advocate.
