Class Action Grievance: Unfair Punishment
As exposed in my petition
to abolish (or renovate) the disastrous, union-busting, poverty-promoting "Second Chance
Apprentice" Program, these poor coworkers are punished excessively
compared to all other CTA workers. So I filed a Class Action Grievance
on their behalf.
It is so important for me—as their union representative—to defend the most oppressed among us. Not that I can ignore anyone else. No! It is imperative that I do not overlook anyone—especially those who are unfairly pre-judged as unworthy because they served time in prison.
Not only must we condemn disparate treatment, but we must correct the system that fosters it. That is why I have rewritten the Local 308 represented side of the Second Chance Program in Attachment O of our Collective Bargaining Agreement. This has been submitted for Contract negotiations.
The Second Chancers are constantly deceived by CTA mismanagement and corrupt, uncaring union officials. They are dragged around for 12 to 48 months while fed lies about getting a Full-Time position as Janitor or Servicer. Almost half that don't quit or fired are then dumped on the street and told it is a celebration. The Chicago Transit Justice Coalition organized a protest outside of CTA headquarters during one of these cynical "Celebration" events.
Even if I am removed from office as their union representative, I will always condemn how they are mistreated. I know if we do not condemn the abuse of the least among us in stature, the rest of us will be brought down as well.
